The Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards (SLBS) wishes to inform the public of activities in commemoration of World Standards Day (WSD), which is observed on October 14th each year. World Standards Day was established to pay tribute to the many volunteers on technical committees who work with standards organization around the world to develop standards. This is an opportunity to focus attention on the important role of standards and appreciate the work of the thousands of experts who develop and promote the use of standards. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has established this year’s theme as, “Protect the Planet with Standards”
The 2020 theme recognizes our resilience as a global community and therefore is amplifying how standards has assisted and made possible tremendous achievements in human welfare, environmental protection and economic resilience in every generation of standards work throughout the years of standards development.
In Saint Lucia, SLBS uses the opportunity to celebrate, the achievements of and advocate for an appreciation of standardization in improving our quality of life, showcase opportunities for implementation of standards by both the public and private sectors to enhance livelihoods, protect human and plant health, and facilitate to trade.
Given the changes and strict protocols occasioned by COVID 19, this year most of our engagements will be held virtually, a series of activities will be delivered via an online platform and we encourage as many as possible to register.
A series of standards and quality promotion sessions are scheduled with the technical departments of the SLBS to inform consumers about relevant standards with regard to ensuring health & safety. An address to the nation will delivered by the Minister of Commerce, Industry, Investment, Enterprise Development and Consumer Affairs Hon. Bradley Felix to be aired on Tuesday 13th October on NTN and all major television stations.
