Tour of Metrology and National Agricultural Diagnostic Facility (NADF) Laboratories

On Friday 17th May 2024, a tour of the Metrology Lab of the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards (SLBS) and the National Agricultural Diagnostic Facility (NADF) was conducted as part of the observance of World Metrology Day. World Metrology Day is celebrated annually on the 20th of May 2024.

In attendance were Mr. Peter Lorde (Chairman of the Standards Council), Dr. Hayden Alcindor (Council Member), Mr. Ernie Pierre (Council Member), Mr. Donald Popo (Council Member National Consumer Association), Mr. Ricky Jn. Baptiste (Representative for External Affairs/ International Trade), Ms. Jeannine-Shi Henry (Programme Development Officer for the Saint Lucia National Commission for UNESCO), Heads of Departments and staff of the SLBS.

The Head of the Metrology Department; Mr. Anselm Gittens gave detailed information concerning the work of the Metrology Department and its various achievements over the years.  He mentioned the value of the work of Metrology in terms of compression testing, dispute measurements, verification tests, verification of blood pressure meters, monitoring of the use of metric units in Saint Lucia, calibration of scales and working with various construction companies.

The other labs in the building which were visited included:

  • The Agronomy Lab which tests soil ph, soil matter and soil phosphorus.
  • Food Processing Lab which gives assurance to persons in relation to food products. It was revealed that seamoss is usually tested as it has become a commodity which is exported by several Saint Lucians on a regular basis. The importing country usually requests documentation from an authoritative body hence the lab tests serve to provide confidence in the benefits of the seamoss.
  • Plant Pathology Lab: Test and analysis are conducted to determine the presence of fungi in soil. The work is done through crop protection/extension officers.
  • Entomology Lab: Tests and analysis of various insect species found in Saint Lucia as well as the invasive species.
  • Analytical/Chemistry Lab: Conducts rapid testing for pesticide and antibiotic residue.

The Veterinary and Livestock Section was also visited: This section of the facility houses the various laboratories which deal with animal tests and analysis. Labs visited include:

  • Animal Preparation Lab: Receiving and preparation of animals and/or animal samples to conduct tests in relation to animal diseases.
  • Parasitology Lab: Tests are conducted to detect parasites in animals.
  • Pathology Lab: Conducts necropsy (examination of an animal after death to determine the cause of death, or extent of disease).
